I ended up here through a search on technorati, and I’m so glad that I did – this is a great blog, and your book looks like it will be really good helping parents (and teens) get a handle on how to be proactive about keeping themselves safe online. parents should make sure their kids know these tips, and how to report anything suspicous or untoward they encounter to Cybertipline, just in case. All these stories about predators make me really nervous – i don’t think that it’s possible to be too careful online- you never know who is really on the other end of the keyboard, so to speak.

Marie — thank you for your comment. We believe the biggest problem, why MySpace and social networking became a “problem,” is lack of knowledge. Teens discovered it, embraced it, built it up, before their parents even knew it existed. Parents need to learn about MySpace so they themselves can feel at ease. We worry every time our teen gets into the driver’s seat of a car, but we let them do that, because it’s part of normal life for an older teen to drive sometimes. MySpace and social networking and instant messaging are like that too.

Parents fear what they don’t understand (we are just human beings, after all) when it comes to the safety of our kids. We need to learn about this new thing, so we can make sure we’re doing our best to make it safe for teens. It’s not going away, just like cars, telephones, the Internet itself (with all the porno sites), didn’t go away just because some people used them for dangerous and harmful activities.

Parents need to learn…
